The queue for the shower stops mattering. What changes: nobody runs out. Back-to-back showers, a long bath, and a late dish session all work, and the household stops sequencing around the tank. Scale is the primary failure path for a tankless unit. Water passes through a narrow heat exchanger and is heated rapidly — precisely the condition that precipitates minerals. Scale reduces heat transfer, restricts flow, and eventually produces error codes.
Descaling is scheduled maintenance, not a repair. With isolation valves fitted it's straightforward.
A unit that has become slow to heat, delivers reduced flow, or throws intermittent errors is very often scaled rather than failing. That's a service call, and a fraction of the cost of a replacement — but it's also the outcome of habit five being skipped for several years.

Whole-house electric tankless avoids gas and venting entirely and substitutes a substantial electrical requirement — frequently multiple high-amperage dedicated circuits and, in many homes, a service upgrade. Where incoming water is cold, the required capacity climbs further.
