Where: attics, crawlspaces, garages, exterior walls, and outbuildings. Prevention: insulate exposed runs, seal air leaks near pipework, and don't switch the heating off entirely in winter. A washing machine hose. Why it's an unattended classic: these are wear items under constant pressure that fail without warning, and they're behind a machine nobody moves. A hose that goes on Friday evening delivers water at full supply pressure until somebody notices. Prevention: replace anything visibly aged, kinked, corroded at the fittings, or simply of unknown age — and turn the taps off behind the machine when you're away for more than a few days.

Prevention: read your meter with everything off, twice a year, and isolate irrigation when it isn't in use.
A slab or underfloor leak. Why it's an unattended classic: there's nothing to see and often nothing to hear from another room. It doesn't stop, and pressurised water under a slab erodes what's supporting the concrete. Prevention: the meter test again, plus attention to the tells — a warm patch on a floor, running water sounds with nothing on, or new cracking.
Water travels before it appears. It runs along joists, beams, and pipe runs and drops at the first opportunity — so the stain is where it finished rather than where it started. Cutting under the mark produces two holes and one leak.
So the failure gets located first — isolation and pressure testing to identify which section has failed, then acoustic listening, thermal imaging, and moisture mapping to fix it to a point.
Then there's usually a choice about which face to open — the wall itself, the room behind it, the ceiling below, or a crawlspace. If one side is tiled and the other is painted drywall, that decision is worth making deliberately, and it's yours to make.
