Everyone in the household operates it. Adults, teenagers, guests, housemates, cleaners, occasionally children. It gets used several times a day by people who have never been told anything about it beyond where the switch is — and almost none of them know it has a reset button, a hex socket, or a rule about which temperature of water to run.
That's why so many disposal calls are avoidable. Not because anyone did something reckless, but because the one appliance everybody touches is the one nobody was briefed on.

Never put a hand into the chamber. Ever. Not to clear a jam, not to retrieve something, not with the switch off. Use tongs or pliers, and only with the power isolated at the breaker. Why it matters more than it sounds: disposals grind by impact and torque with blunt impellers, so the injury risk is crushing rather than cutting. This is the one item on the list that everyone in the house needs, including anyone who visits.
The wall switch is not "off". Isolating means the breaker, or unplugging the unit if it's on a cord and receptacle beneath the sink. Switches fail, and someone else in the household doesn't know you're working on it.
There's a reset button underneath. A small button, usually red, on the underside of the unit. When the motor overloads it trips and the disposal goes completely dead — no sound at all. Let it cool for a few minutes, then press firmly until it clicks and stays in. This single fact is the most common free fix in the kitchen, and most households don't know the button exists.
There's a hex wrench, and it's probably in a drawer. Most units ship with a small hex wrench that fits a socket in the centre of the underside. It's used to free the rotation when the unit hums but doesn't turn. Find it and tape it to the unit. If it's long gone, a broom handle down through the sink opening, levered against an impeller, does the same job.
Cold water, plenty of it, and keep it running. Start the water before the disposal and keep it going for several seconds after the sound smooths out. Cold, not hot — cold keeps fats solid so they're ground and carried away, while hot melts them and they re-solidify further along the pipe. This is the single habit that most affects whether your kitchen line blocks.
What it isn't for. Grease, fibrous vegetables like celery and corn husks, potato peelings, pasta and rice in volume, coffee grounds, bones, fruit pits, shells — and anything that isn't food. Cutlery, bottle caps, and twist ties account for a large share of jams and a fair number of destroyed units.
Tell everyone who uses your kitchen items one and three. The rest is habit; those two are the ones that prevent an injury and a callout.
And never pour chemical drain cleaner into a disposal. It sits in the chamber and the trap, it's caustic among metal components in a confined space, and it becomes a hazard for whoever opens that trap next. If someone in the household already has, tell us when you call — it changes how we approach the job, and that's the only reason we ask.

If the motor turns freely and it sounds normal, the appliance is fine — and the restriction is in the path out: the discharge elbow, the trap, or the branch line beyond.
A two-minute test: fill the other side of a double sink and release it. If that side drains freely and the disposal side doesn't, the restriction is close by. If both sides are slow, you're looking further downstream and the disposal is entirely innocent.

New disposals ship with the dishwasher inlet sealed by a knockout plug — a moulded plug that must be removed before the dishwasher hose is connected. If it isn't, the dishwasher has nowhere to drain: it backs up, sits full of water, or overflows, and the disposal gets blamed.
It's the most common installation error on this appliance.
The other dishwasher-related faults: a blocked disposal chamber or discharge path, food debris at the inlet port, and a missing high loop or air gap, which lets dirty sink water siphon back into the dishwasher.
